If you are already taking supplements…great job!! You probably understand the importance of supplementing your diet with important vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that are largely missing in our modern diets. If you do not currently take supplements, let me take a moment to try and impress upon you why this is important, and then I will resume with the main point of this message…Do you know which supplements you really need?

Why Do I Need to Supplement…Don’t I Get Enough Nutrients From Food?

In a perfect world this would be true. Unfortunately there are several reasons as to why it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to get the levels of nutrients needed for OPTIMAL health through food alone.

Over the last half century our food has drastically changed. Specifically, our produce, our water, and our animal proteins (meats, eggs, dairy). Today’s produce contain far fewer vitamins and minerals than they did a half-century ago. Modern, intensive agricultural methods have stripped increasing amounts of nutrients from the soil. Different chemicals such as pesticides and fertilizers disrupt the soil quality, and deplete it of vital nutrients.

In fact, in 2004 a team of researchers from the University of Texas Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry conducted research on the nutrients found in 43 common garden fruits and vegetables. This research revealed that the produce available today doesn’t contain even close to the nutritional value that it did 50 years ago. In fact, it continues to decline every year. The nutritional content in our food supply has plummeted by an average of 30 to 60 percent in the last 50 years.

Some produce has suffered more than others. As an example…broccoli, which averaged 12.9 milligrams of calcium per gram of dry weight in 1950, has declined to only 4.4 milligrams today! And…you would have to eat eight oranges today to derive the same amount of Vitamin C as a single orange our grandparents would have eaten!

Not only has our produce been affected, but also our animal products, such as meats, dairy, and eggs. They are all fed genetically modified feed and are loaded up with chemicals, drugs, growth hormones, and antibiotics. This is all done to create animals with larger cuts of meat or sweeter milk, but all these chemicals diminishes their nutrient absorption, which also decreases our ability to extract those nutrients from the meat, eggs and dairy we consume.

Exposure to environmental toxins and poor gut health also hinders our ability to break down food and extract the nutrients from it. For all these reasons, most of us are lacking in at least some nutrients that are key for optimal health.

Back to My Original Question…Do You Know Which Supplements You Need?

Unless you have had Nutritional Testing done, the answer is likely “no”. Micro-nutrient Testing is something that I recommend for all of my patients. The testing that I use is SpectraCell’s Micro-nutrient test. This test measures the function of 35 nutritional components including vitamins, antioxidants, minerals and amino acids within your white blood cells. Scientific evidence shows us that analyzing the white blood cells gives us the most accurate analysis of a body’s deficiencies.

By knowing your specific deficiencies you can be armed with the information needed to overcome them. This is critical if you are truly serious about achieving optimal wellness!
