Gluten Sensitivity | Dr. Shel Wellness & Aesthetic Center

Gluten Intolerance is a growing concern for many people as there is more information in the media and many food producers are now focusing their attention on “gluten free” foods.

For years, gluten intolerance has been misdiagnosed as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Celiac Disease, Crohn’s Disease, Acid Reflux, and Colitis. While it can be difficult to diagnose these conditions, in recent years, it has become easier to determine if gluten intolerance or sensitivity is the main cause for misdiagnosis and sometimes very severe symptoms.

Common Symptoms of Gluten Intolerance:

  • Acid Reflux
  • Abdominal cramping
  • Bloating
  • Abdominal gas
  • Skin irritation
  • Irritability
  • Lethargy
  • Brain fog

What to Expect *

Determining the level of gluten intolerance and starting a treatment protocol is a simple process that begins with an in-depth consultation with one of our wellness consultants. Your medical history and symptoms will be reviewed prior to any testing or treatment. I have found in my years of experience that most patients who are sensitive to gluten are also sensitive to other foods so we test for 96 common foods, including gluten, with our 96IgG test to determine if there are any other foods in the diet that need to be addressed or removed completely.

Once results are received, they are reviewed in an extensive office visit with Dr. Shel. Most patients will go on a rotation diet to exclude products that contain gluten along with any other foods they are sensitive to. Once the foods that are causing the symptoms are removed, patients begin to feel better almost immediately. The course of treatment depends on the severity of the intolerance but typically lasts 3-6 months. Although most patients decide they feel so much better that they do not re-introduce the foods into their diet.
