Pellet Therapy | Dr. Shel Wellness & Aesthetic Center
Hormonal imbalance is something that will occur in all men and women at some point in their lives as their body’s production of hormones decline with age. Aside from the aging process, there are other causes that can worsen and decelerate the process, such as prescription drugs, birth control, stress, poor diets, and environmental toxins. The effects of hormonal imbalance can have a dramatic effect on a person’s quality of life and also make them more susceptible to diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.
Common Symptoms of Hormonal Imbalance:
- Fatigue
- Brain fog
- Low libido
- Weight gain
- Hot flashes
- Night sweats
- Anxiety / Depression
- Mood swings / Irritability
- Decreased muscle mass
- Insomnia / Sleep disturbances
What is Pellet Therapy?
Pellet Therapy is a form of Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement. Pellets have been uses for the treatment of hormonal imbalance since the 1930’s and have many unique advantages over other methods of hormone administration. Pellets are tiny cylinders about the size of a grain of rice that are inserted in the fatty area of the upper buttock. This is a very quick, simple, and painless in-office procedure. The incision is so small that there are no need for stitches. There is virtually no downtime and you can return to your daily routine.
What are Pellets Made of?
Pellets are made from plants that have been modified at the molecular level to become identical to your body’s natural hormones (Bio-identical). The bio-identical hormones are then crystallized into a powder that is compressed into tiny cylinders that are about the size of a grain of rice. A small amount of Stearic Acid is used to bind the pellet together. Pellets are available as Testosterone and Estrogen.
What are the Advantages of Pellets?
Pellets are “Cardiac Drive”, meaning that they release the hormones into your bloodstream based on your body’s need. This delivery more closely matches the way your body releases hormones than any other method of hormone therapy. This steady delivery of hormone also eliminates the possibility of highs and lows associated with some other delivery methods such as injections. Pellet therapy is a fantastic option for men who are on testosterone replacement.
Pellets last between 3-5 months in women and 5-6 months in men. Eliminating the need for rubbing in daily creams or having weekly injections are some of the benefits that many pellet patients enjoy. Once we have your dose dialed in, you don’t even have to think about your hormones until it is time to replace your pellets! For some, the transference of creams onto others, especially children, is a concern. Pellets eliminate this issue as well.

FAQs
Yes, pellets are made entirely of crystallized hormones and dissolve entirely, so there is no need to remove anything.
Progesterone is not available as a pellet. When progesterone is needed we will prescribe oral progesterone to be taken in the evening.
No problem. We look at your existing treatment doses and your baseline lab results to determine your new dose for pellets. We will work with you to time the discontinuation of your existing hormones so that there is little to no downtime.
We conduct labs to get your hormone values, along with a comprehensive evaluation of your symptoms to determine your dose. We usually start off a little conservative so that we do not over-correct, and then increase the dose as needed.
Congratulations! There is no need to stop pellets while pregnant; in fact it will make for a healthier pregnancy.
