Although oil pulling has received a lot of attention lately, it is certainly nothing new. Oil pulling is actually mentioned in Charaka Samhita, an early Ayurvedic text dating to roughly 300 to 500 AD.

The act of Oil Pulling, also known as oil swishing, is meant to help remove bacteria and toxins from your mouth. Scientists believe that the lipids in the oil both pulls out bacteria, as well as stops bacterial from sticking to the walls of the oral cavity.

The Health Benefits of Oil Pulling Include:

    • Overall strengthening of the teeth and gums and jaws.
    • Prevention of diseases of the gums and mouth, such as cavities and gingivitis.
    • Prevention for bad breath.
    • Potential holistic remedy for bleeding gums.
    • Prevention of dryness of the lips, mouth and throat.
    • Possible help for the lymphatic system.

What Type of Oil Should I Use?

The two best oils to use are generally believed to be Coconut oil and Sesame oil. However, sesame has a higher concentration of omega-6 oils, and since most of us get too much omega-6 oils in our diet we need to off-set this with more omega-3s. Coconut oil is high an omega 3 oil, so it is the clear winner in that regard.

Additionally, coconut oil has greater antibacterial and anti-viral properties, and has even been shown to be beneficial for combating Candida yeast.

Make sure that whichever oil you are using that it is organic to avoid any toxins associated with conventional oils.

Here’s How You Do Oil Pulling:

        1. Put about a tablespoon of oil in your mouth.
        2. Swish the oil around your mouth for about 10-20 minutes. For best results try to “push” and “pull” the oil between your teeth.
        3. Spit out the oil, then brush your teeth.
