Allergies and intolerances are becoming all too common in kids and adults. If you experience regular discomfort such as bowel problems, swelling or rashes and other complaints that cannot be easily traces to bacterial or viral infections or chronic illnesses it is best to get allergy tested. Even if it is just to eliminate intolerances, allergies and sensitivities as the cause of the problem. Why go through all that discomfort when it’s possible to avoid the trigger food or fluids?
Most Common Intolerances and Sensitivities:
Dairy – Dairy sensitivities are usually the result of either the bodies inability to properly process lactose or a sensitivity to the protein casein. Sensitivities to casein are more common in infants and children, while lactose intolerances are more common in adults. Reactions can be mild to severe and include itchy skin, rash, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, coughing, and more.
Wheat and Gluten – This form of allergy or intolerance can some time have a lot in common with more serious gluten aversions such as Celiac disease which if undetected can cause long lasting and varied discomfort and health issues. This type of sensitivity is commonly associated with symptoms such as gut complaints and testing should be undertaken to determine if avoiding wheat is worth considering. Gluten free foods that are purpose made such as gluten free past often contain higher concentrations of sugar and salt that their normal counterparts so avoiding gluten by using these options is not recommended without testing.
Soy – Though you may not have an obvious allergic reaction to soy, most people are sensitive to soy. The truth is that there is no such thing as an all-natural soy-based food, because soybeans are toxic in their natural state. They have to be processed or fermented to try and remove their natural toxins. Soy can also contribute to hormonal imbalance, especially in women. Soy sensitivities have increased dramatically over the past few decades as soy has been promoted as a “health food”. It’s difficult to avoid eating soy because of its wide use in most processed foods, including infant formula, cereals, and even salad dressings!
Corn – Corn is in almost everything! Nearly 99% of our foods have corn or some sort of corn derivative in it, making it extremely difficult to avoid. Sensitivities to corn can cause headaches, foggy brain, behavior changes, fatigue, and more. One of the big issues with corn these days is that over 70% of it is Genetically Modified (GMO), further contributing to the negative health affects that it has on many people.
Yeast – Yeast isn’t just in bread! Beer contains brewer’s yeast and baking yeast can be found in a wide variety of baked goods and processed foods. Yeast can cause all kinds of negative reactions including gas, bloating, foggy thinking, fatigue and more. Excess yeast can also build up in your gut from excessive use of antibiotics, which kill not only the bad bacteria, but also the good bacteria that helps to prevent yeast from taking over in your gut.
Histamine – Those with a low level of the enzyme diamine oxidase which allows us to digest foods containing histamines without an adverse reaction may break out in allergy like symptoms from eating foods such as fermented drinks, mushrooms, processed meat, dried fruit and a variety of different foods.
