Your thyroid gland regulates just about every other hormone in your body. So much so that it is known as the “master gland of the metabolism” and it is interwoven with every other major hormone and system in your body.
Simply put, if your thyroid is not functioning correctly, neither are you.
Fortunately, you’re not alone. Hypothyroidism, or low thyroid function, accounts for nearly 90% of all thyroid issues in men and women in the U.S..
Have you wondered if your thyroid is functioning sub-optimally? If you’re like more than 40% of the American population, chances are it’s not functioning at its prime.
Here are 10 signs it could be hypothyroidism:
- Exhausted even after a full night’s sleep
- Difficulty losing weight
- Anxiety and/or depression
- Irregular menstrual cycles, PMS, infertility & low libido
- Muscle and joint pain
- Cold hands and feet
- Hair loss
- Brittle nails
- Constipation
- Inability to concentrate & poor memory
Do any of these symptoms sound familiar?
If so, I encourage you to have your thyroid levels tested and speak to your physician about these symptoms. These symptoms should never be ignored or worse, masked with prescription drugs such as antidepressants, sleep aids, muscle relaxers, etc…
If you believe you are suffering from hypothyroidism, here are a few surefire ways to get back on the right track:
- Take the right supplements. High quality, medical-grade supplements such as vitamin D, B vitamins, iodine and selenium all support healthy thyroid function. Be sure you are on an excellent vitamin regimen. This is one of the simplest ways you can support your thyroid gland.
- Support your adrenal glands. These important glands are what help you handle stress and stressful situations. They also work alongside the thyroid gland so when one is stressed, it puts stress on the other. Practice meditation or yoga, supplement with relaxing herbs and nutrients, such as tranquility and magnesium, or adopt healthy breathing exercises. Vitamin C in therapeutic doses is another excellent way to promote adrenal support.
- Get a minimum of eight hours of rest each night. I realize this is most likely easier said than done but it is important to note that without sufficient rest, your body cannot recover and heal itself on a daily basis. Your thyroid gland, and all of your hormones, need to recover every single day in order to keep up with the demands they need. Give them the rest they deserve. If you have trouble sleeping, melatonin or Tranquility are great supplements that help you fall and stay asleep naturally.
- Heal your gut. Your gut works as your second brain so if it’s inflamed and irritated, the rest of your body will follow suit. I cannot express the importance of being on a pristine probiotic supplement to support overall gut health, as well as how crucial it is to avoid gluten, processed foods and refined sugar. You heal your body from the inside out when you heal your gut.
- Work with a functional medicine practitioner who will work with you when it comes to getting to the root cause of your thyroid imbalance. Many mainstream, conventional physicians are not properly trained to address hormonal imbalances, such as hypothyroidism. It is so important that your provider not only run the correct laboratory tests, but also to listen to your symptoms and address them naturally and not with prescription drugs.
